The research group GLOCON has released a report which puts the views of those affected by large-scale gold mining in Burkina Faso at the centre of the analysis.
Artisanal gold mining accounts for approximately 20 per cent of the world's primary mined gold production. Around 12 to 15 million people, including 4.5 million women and one million children, currently depend on the mostly informal sector for their livelihoods in many rural communities in over 70 countries worldwide, including Burkina Faso.
According to the Minister for Mines, a total of 12 industrial mines, 200 officially recognized artisanal mining sites, and around 800 illegal gold panning sites were operating in Burkina Faso in 2017.
